To a Fallen Comrade

(Written by Pat Duffy Hutcheon in memory of a beloved hiking companion.)

We miss your presence on the trail;
your grasp of the terrain.
We miss your cheery countenance
through wind and snow and rain;
the arguments that made the mountains echo in reply;
the sheer dependability of hand and foot and eye.

We miss the helping hand outstretched
in fellowship and love;
the firmness of the arm extended
from the rock above.
We cherish most the leadership that helped us all to learn.
And we weep for all who venture forth on the path of no return.
