Purchasing a domain name

Domain names are sold on sites all over the Web. We do not recommend specific domain registrars, but RegisterFly and GoDaddy are two of many registrars our users have patronized with success.

Domain names typically cost around $10 a year, with discounts for longer registrations. The entire transaction is handled on the Web using a credit card.

When you register a domain name, you'll create an account with a login ID and password. Many domain names can be managed under one account, and some people choose to add a humanist group's domain name to an account where personal domain names are also managed. We strongly advise against this practice, even if ownership contacts are kept separate. If you are purchasing a domain name for your group, we suggest you start a new account for just that domain name -- and be sure to share the login information with at least one other responsible person. This will help your group avoid problems with domain name management down the road.

Important note: Whether you already own a domain name or are purchasing one for the first time, and regardless of your choice of domain registrar, you will need certain information from us in order to direct the domain name to our server. If you purchase the name prior to the setup of your Humanists.net account, just "park" it (leave it set to the registrar's default name servers) for the time being. Be sure to keep track of your account login information so that you can make the needed change later.

Also important: Purchase just the name registration -- not a hosting package! We're providing your hosting free of charge. Don't pay someone else for services you will not use.
