8:00pm: Informal gathering in Carlingford Arms.
For those who may be arriving on Friday, here’s a chance for getting acquainted with early-bird Humanists while having a relaxing drink.


Saturday 18 August

9:15 - 9.45 am: Registration

10:00 : Introduction   Justin Keating - President of the HAI, former Minister in the Dail, Professor of Veterinary Medicine

10:30 : "The Humanist Legacy in Europe"  Philippe Besson, Libre Pensee Francaise.

11.30 : Break for tea & coffee

12:00 : "Settling Old Scores: the Role of the Church in Films about Ireland”   Martin McLoone, Professor of Film Studies, University of Ulster

1:00 pm: Lunch

2.00 : Workshops:  group activities on various discussion topics

3.00 : Leisure pursuits: Walk on Sleive Foy (bring boots, etc);  Music-making (bring instrument and/or sheet music)

8.00 : Evening dinner in Four Seasons Hotel - Food, good company, after-dinner entertainment (Cost of dinner not included in fee)


Sunday 27 August

10:00 am: “Humanism – a joyful brand or an invisible one?”  Fergus Finlay

11.30 : “The Joy of Text” Glenn Patterson, novelist:  Burning Your Own (1988), Fat Lad (1992), Black Night at Big Thunder Mountain (1995), The International (1999), Number 5 (2003) and That Which Was (2004).  His journalism was collected under the title, “Lapsed Protestant” (2006).
